The AS5300 is probably the most successful voice and data access server/gateway in history. It's well known 2U profile, with 3 expansion slots, must be hardware-provisioned with specific hardware to build either a VOIP/voice or dialup unit - the voice and data hardware is physically different.
The AS5300 can be configured with single or dual/redundant AC or DC power supplies, and typically is configured with 128MB DRAM (maximum possible) and 16MB Flash (32MB possible). There are two ethernet ports - one 10, and one 10/100. While supporting the same protocols and codecs as its newer brothers above, the AS5300 uses different component cards. The three slot chassis can accept a 4PRI or 8PRI trunk card in the lowest slot Data/fax gateway are typically configured for 96 or 192 dialup modem ports for T1 environments and for 120 or 240 ports for E1 environments. When configured for voice service, T1 units can be designed to have 24, 48, or 96 voice ports, and E1 units can have 30, 60, or 120 voice ports.
While official Cisco support for the AS5300 has come to an end, and software releases end with version 12.3.x. However, the AS5300 is so widely used that a huge base of repair equipment and 3rd party technical support should be available into the foreseeable future. The highly modular nature of the AS5300 makes repair exceptionally easy, and its wide deployment makes replacement card availability relatively inexpensive and easy to get.

AS5300 VOIP Gateways
The AS5300 remains one of the best values in voice gateways, and continues to support most of the same features of its much more expensive and newer relatives (AS5350, AS5400, AS5400XM, etc). While supporting the same protocols and codecs as its newer brothers above, the AS5300 requires installation of specific voice hardware, and a voice configured AS5300 cannot support dialup service. The bottom slot in an AS5300 is provisioned with either an E1 or T1 trunk card (details below). The top two slots can be provisioned with voice carrier cards and DSPs. The voice carrier cards (AS53-CC-VOX) can support from 1 to 5 low density (6 port C542 AS53-VOX) or high density (12 port C549 AS53-VOXD) DSP voice modules - the carrier card needs to have the proper firmware installed for the DSP modules used, and to match the IOS - if the wrong firmware is installed, the voice cards will not function at all! Also note that the C542 and C549 DSP modules cannot be mixed on a carrier card. The PRI choices are 4 or 8, T1 or E1 - and the three slot chassis sets aside the bottom slot for the 4PRI or 8PRI trunk card. Note that both types (4 PRI and 8 PRI) trunk cards can come with-or-without a bank of four fast serial ports. Trunk cards with fast serial ports are designated with a '+' sign in the part number, and gateways with such cards in them are denoted as "A" units - as in AS5300-120VOIP-A. The fast serial ports are sometimes used to backhaul voice traffic directly from the AS5300 to a router (for example a 7206), thereby bypassing the ethernet port and reducing traffic congestion. Note that this is the ONLY DIFFERENCE between an "A" and "non A" voice gateway. Some believe that the A units are more recent or have other advanced features, but this is NOT TRUE aside from the fast serial ports.

The AS5300 As A Dialup Gateway
The AS5300 is exceptionally versatile and easy to use as a data/dialup unit. A 4 or 8 PRI card is installed in the bottom slot, and low or high density dialup carrier cards (AS53-CC-DM or AS53-CC-DMM) can be installed and populated with 6 or 12 port Mica modem for up to 120 high density mica modems or AS53-CC-DM for up to 60 low density mica modems with up to 60 ports). Each carrier card can be fitted with up to 10 mica modules, either Mica 12DMM (12 port) or 6DM (6 port) dialup modem cards supporting V92, V90, V34 and various other fax and data protocols. As a dialup unit, the AS5300 can hold up to 240 ports in an E1 environment or 192 port in a T1 environment - these higher density configurations require the 8 PRI card. Typical configurations are a 4T1 card (with or without fast serial ports) with 96 dialup ports, a 4E1 with 120, 8T1 192, and 8E1 240. The AS5300 above could easily picture a 4T1/96 or 4E1/120 dialup unit, provisioned with a single AC power supply.
