All Cisco 2000/3000 modular routers can be fitted with a variety of expansion cards - NM type, WIC type, AIM, and PVDM. However, not all modules and components work in all routers, and its important to know what cards and modules work with which routers, as well as what specific IOS is required. In general, many of the newer and more sophisticated expansion modules will only be compatible with the newer lines of routers. However, incompatibility of expansion modules with routers occurs extensively, by design; Cisco specifically designs certain WIC and NM modules to work ONLY with specific lines of routers, and they WILL NOT WORK in others. So do your homework!
The lines of routers supporting NM, WIC, AIM, and PVDM expansion modules are the Cisco 1700, 1800, 2600 / 2600XM, 2800, 2900, 3600, 3700, 3800, and 3900.
